Medical Summer School programme

Day 1: The Heart & Circulation

After getting to know everyone, we start our summer school with the most important organ of them all, the heart. Teaching students about the structure and the function of the heart, we visualise the process of heart failure and reinforce how clots cause infarction.

We evaluate a series of pioneering innovations within cardiology, from wearable ECG watches that can detect arrhythmias to remote robotic heart surgery from thousands of miles away.

Our afternoon will focus on teaching students CPR and understanding the reversible and irreversible mechanisms behind this. Lastly, we will debate the consequences of bovine valve transplants and 3d-augmented pig heart transplants.

Day 2: The Brain & Mind

Today we’ll explore the intricacies of the brain and our mind. We understand the growing prevalence of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. We dive deep into the causes, symptoms and biology behind mood disorders, questioning the rationale for anti-depressants. Finally we look at a series of drugs within the pipeline including the use of psilocybin for TRD.

Later, we build on a growing focus of research within sleep science. We understand why modern societies have become chronically deprived of sleep, the impact of blue light on REM sleep and offer practical advice on how to improve your sleep.

The afternoon focuses on the deafness, an often underappreciated condition. We teach students how to assess patients hearing using Rinnes & Webers tests and look at a few innovative start-up’s combining med-tech to improve our hearing.

We conclude day 2 by teaching our students how to interpret CT scans, understanding the symptoms of strokes and debating on whether euthanasia can ever be acceptable in a medical society governed by the principle – ‘do no harm’.

Day 3: The Lungs & Cancer Medicine

Day 3 dives into the lungs, teaching students about the structure and function of one of our most vital organs. Students will build their own lung models to help understand normal and pathological physiology and how this translates to the symptoms of breathlessness, pain and wheeze.

We will breakdown one of the most common childhood illnesses – Asthma and teach students how to use their own stethoscopes to conduct a respiratory exam. Finally we will teach students why we tests a patient’s peak flow and compare the variation within our class.

Before lunch our doctors will teach a step by step format for interpreting chest X-rays and we will look at a series of examples of different diseases. Students will learn to differentiate cancer from tuberculosis and be able to visualise severe Covid-19 pneumonitis.

Our afternoon takes a turn away from respiratory Medicine. Our resident oncologist will teach the foundations of cancer medicine and showcase some of the innovative science behind the future of cancer medicine.

Day 4: Hormones & Optimal Nutrition

We know that hormones are chemical messengers, but what do they actually do? What happens when there is too much or too little? Our fourth day focuses on endocrinology, the medicine behind hormone related disease.

We start by understanding at a series of conditions including Acromegaly, Cushing’s and Diabetes. We understand the hormone profiles of these diseases, their symptoms and their treatments. Diabetes is a growing problem for many modern populations, fortunately there has been an acceleration in innovation helping mitigate its impact. We peak into the world of continuous glucose monitoring and islet cell transplantation.

Our second focus looks at the growing burden of obesity. We look into the pathophysiology and genetics behind the disease as well as evaluate the surgical options available. After lunch, we provide a thorough evaluation of nutrition medicine – an undertaught aspect of the medical curriculum.

To finish our penultimate day, we engage in a topical debate around puberty blockers which often finds itself on front page news.

Day 5: The Admissions Cycle, Research & Next Steps

Congratulations, you’ve made it to your final day! Today our doctors will walk you through the entire admissions cycle offering you a glimpse of the journey ahead.

Our group activities work on drafting an improved personal statement, perfecting your abstract reasoning technique for the UCAT and debating the controversial titles within the BMAT essay.

Our afternoon focuses on interview preparation, encouraging students to leverage their existing interests within their careers in Medicine. Talks from doctors who have complemented their medical journey with art, coding and nutrition are provided, helping inspire our students.

Lastly, we will have a look at published research and teach students a method to critique and analyse published papers.
